When does the Portal start landing?

Supposedly over 1,000 guys in the portal, but I don't believe I've heard of any landing spots for a single one of them.

What am I missing? Is there a mandatory waiting period before schools can offer players?

Guess I popped my popcorn too soon.

Re: When does the Portal start landing?

I just posted a link on the Transfer Portal thread about Jackson LaDuke being the only former Duck of the 12 to commit so far and he is going to Nevada where Ken Wilson is the head coach who was his position coach at Oregon.

Otherwise I am guessing the majority of transfers are waiting until the end of the bowl games to see what is available...ditto on coaches making offers to those in the portal.

I do imagine Mario Cristobal is not waiting for anything 😂

Here is a key provision I gleaned from an article... basically nobody has to decide now or even when the portal closes.

"The portal is open until Jan. 18, then closes until May. Players don't have to commit to a team during those windows; they simply must register their name in the portal."

Re: When does the Portal start landing?

Ok.

I wrongly assumed there would be more of a frenzy amongst players and coaches to secure spots on rosters. I think I heard a stat somewhere that 40% of players hitting portal never even find a landing spot? Thought there would be more urgency.

Guess I'll relax for a while.

Re: When does the Portal start landing?

Ducks are hosting some portal kids this weekend. Maybe soon, we'll start seeing some transfers in.

Re: When does the Portal start landing?

The more players in the portal favors coaches who can then be more selective.

Not every player in the portal is a starter and former 5* recruit.

Some coaches know they need more depth / backups than anything else.

Here is another key new rule which I think will help towards reducing the wild wild west aspect of the portal...

"NCAA rules allow undergraduates one free transfer. Any player who changed teams during the 2021-22 offseason faces the prospect of sitting out a year if he decides to move a second time."

So if player decides to use his "get into the portal" card after his freshman season, that is it without facing possible penalties.

I wonder how long that rule will last?

Seems like in the day of NIL, a lawyer or two may be champing at the bit to challenge the NCAA. Surprised they haven't already. But what a disaster that would be. We think it's the wild wild rest right now. Sheesh!

Re: When does the Portal start landing?

I don't know if there are exceptions or waivers if your head coach leaves and you have all ready transferred once as one example.

Also remember as per the copy / paste below, there is a second window in May after spring training camp...

"The new rule creates two transfer portal windows in college football and other sports: 45 days "beginning the day following the championship selection," and a 15 day period in the first two weeks of May at the end of spring practice, May 1-15. the two windows last a total of 60 days."

So literally we are just a  week into the first window! 😲
