Possible fix for the portal/recruiting issue

Re: Possible fix for the portal/recruiting issue

Pretty spot on to a degree.  Too many overlapping windows open all at once.  My two cents in order of clandar events:

*  Early Signing Period for HS Early Enrollment- Sunday thru Thursday of Champ Week prior to games played
*  Bowl Season/Playoffs
*  Draft declarations 3 days after Nat Champ Game
*  Winter Transfer Portal Opens same day as draft declaration day, remains open for four weeks
*  LOI Day two weeks after Winter portal closes
*  Spring Transfer Portal Open May 15th-31st

No really good answer to this, but yeah, gotta start placing these windows into seperate boxes...

Thoughts?

Re: Possible fix for the portal/recruiting issue

I also agree to some extent...how about you have to make a commitment to another team within 14 days of entering the transfer portal? If you're serious about moving on, you should know where you want to land. Put on your big boy pants and make another commitment that you are going to honor. Bummer for the coaches. 15 so far for the Ducks or almost 18% of your roster based on 85 scholarships. Essentially, you could have 63% of your roster leave in 3 years! 45 players. New math. The system is broken and needs to be fixed.

Re: Possible fix for the portal/recruiting issue

I still think the early signing date for high school recruits created a lot of havoc and the Transfer Portal only magnified the problems.

Why would you have the early signing date right in the midst of teams preparing for bowl games, Christmas break starting and the like?

Just so kids can enroll early?

If players in the Transfer Portal can choose a team ANY TIME within a window, why can't high school recruits do the same relatively speaking?

The entire recruiting "commitment" phase should cease. It is a pointless PR circus that serves no value beyond chest bumping and bravado talk.

I mean really...a kid makes a "commitment" then sits and waits for months until he can "officially" sign...meanwhile, because he is only "committed" he is still open game for other schools to "flip" his commitment...the whole thing is absurd and ridiculous.

High school recruits should go directly to "sign on the dotted line whenever they are ready" vs waiting for some silly date. If a kid wants to sign in August...let him.

I think the entire recruiting charade is THE PROBLEM and a much bigger one than the Transfer Portal.

Re: Possible fix for the portal/recruiting issue

As recruiting has devolved into some terrible reality game show with "commitments" less serious than what is seen on The Bachelorette, it has also been rendered less important with the advent of the transfer portal.  With the transfer portal, a coach can now see how a player has adjusted to the college game, collegiate academics, homesickness, etc. with a better idea how to gauge potential versus a kid who dominates HS players and who will pretty much get his HS diploma with marginal efforts.

It's no mystery to me why the transfers into the program were as successful as they were this past season. As much as the coaches are known to be great recruiters, they also seem to have a good eye for talent.  I suspect that we will see the same level of playing from the guys coming in via transfer as we did LY.

"One of the biggest things about college football is who can adapt the Best" - Dan Lanning
He made the good quote talking about the portal and all that's going on right now. With so many players entering the portal the Bowl Games are going to be a lot of players you never saw much of. Besides the playoff games moving forward to rest of the games are heading towards something like a scrimmage.

Things are so crazy right now. I caught just the last part of Andrew Nemec. He said this year there's already been 2 players that have listed their final 4 teams in the morning and then commit to a different team later in the day. There's also players planning to go to the highest bidder for the NFT's. You know, those digital cartoon characters young people trade and sell for sometimes tens of thousands of dollars. It's just a circus right not.

I like some of the ideas thrown out for a change, but how likely can the NCAA get anything done? They've been so hands off, which has led to the wild west analogy.
