I'm still on cloud 9 over the Rose Bowl win, but I also know many of us have started wondering about the ceiling in 2020 and beyond. We know they'll lose their QB, most of their offensive line and Troy Dye. But here's 5 reasons I believe Oregon will be a better team in 2020 than they were in 2019.
1. Coaching. Cristobal will be more experienced. The defense will be in year 2 under Avalos. And the new OC will likely be an upgrade over Arroyo (and I'm not hating on Arroyo, never have).
2. Wide Receivers. The Oregon offense should be more wide-open next year. One reason is their receivers will take a step forward. Pittman will be back and (hopefully) healthy. Devon Williams is a huge and very talented weapon. I think he's dying to play. Johnny Johnson and Bryan Addison will be back and more experienced. Oregon will have the services of receivers like Wilhoite, Delgado, Hutson, Waters, Davis and Crocker. There's a ton of raw talent there.
3. A new powerful offensive line. Admittedly the Ducks will lose a ton of experience on the O line. But Sewell will be back and the guys coming in to replace them are huge and very talented. They'll be able to physically impose their will where not even this year's line could. They won't have the experience right away but I do think they'll pick things up quickly.
4. Oregon's defense may be the best in the nation next year, especially if Scott, Lenoir, Graham and Faoliu all return. Graham's already enrolled for 2020. Scott tweeted out last night "Special year ahead" (obviously I agree), which makes me think he's back as well. I don't see Fauliu jumping quite yet. Lenoir may or may not leave early but he's got 2 replacements who are possibly as good or better than he is. Add in the incoming class + one more year of experience and tutelage under Avalos - this year is going to be crazy on that side of the ball. My guess is that Oregon is top 3 in the country in sacks and hurries. Think about this. The Ducks will have up to 3 - 5 star players rushing the QB.
5. Depth. Ducks will have more talent, 2-3 deep than they ever had. Not only is this important to cover injuries, but it allows more options and fresher players.6. I've alluded to it twice but the starting talent on this team is going to be insane. I mean it's very close to being Bama, Ohio State or LSU-level insane. (Clemson may be slightly ahead of all of those though.)
I didn't even mention that Sewell running it on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 gives Oregon a huge advantage they didn't have in 2019 - or that no other team in the NCAA has in 2020.

I'm 100% with you on this. I've read the online "Way too early predictions..." for next year predicting 2-3 losses, but I don't see it that way. Ohio State could be a problem, but the game's at Autzen, and we just don't know how the team is going to come together yet with the new pieces stepping in. I have no worries about the O-line or QB. Might not be as good as this year, but with the D improving, I don't know how much that matters. New OC could really make things interesting! I'm excited, and can't wait. I hate this time of year, when we have to wait so long for Spring ball and then the new season to start.

Breakdown of who is back for Ohio State.
Long story short, most of their offense is back. Their QB is back, they are loaded at the skill positions, 3 of 5 offensive linemen are back. On defense, they lose a lot of linemen, have good returning LBs, and their secondary is rebuilding.
Win that game and there is plenty of margin for error as far as the playoffs. Lose it and you have to win everything else to be in the hunt.
The conference has plenty of dangerous road games, including at Cal.
Also, NDSU is no joke, in 2016 they beat 13th ranked Iowa, in 2014 they beat Iowa State, in 2013 Kansas State, in 2011 Minnesota. Oregon had better not be looking past them to Ohio State.

Putting NDSU on the schedule does nothing for the Ducks and does everything for the Bison. Like EWU a few seasons ago, you bring in a program like this with something to prove and players get hurt. NDSU has better than a puncher's chance to make this a game in to the second half... Rather have a win over San Jose St than these guys as (IMO) it counts better in SoS...

"We never make predictions part of the process." - Mario Cristobal
I am with the head coach on this one. One can work themselves into a frenzy or over confidence with any schedule. Way too many variables between now and September through November.
The standards / goals are always high(make it to the playoffs) but it all begins with winning the Division and I see no reason to think Oregon will be anything but competitive. However it is a week to week process and I look forward to seeing the team "emerge" as in new starting QB, OL and related situations.
I do not like at all the idea of the Wake Forest QB transferring to Oregon...unlike Helfrich, Cristobal has proven he can recruit QB talent. It is not complicated math...there is no way 5 QB's will be on the roster(transfer and 4 recruits) and I think it sends a bad message to recruits...hey we want you but wait, we might bring in a transfer. It is a short term fix but not a long term solution. Shough has been practicing and working for 2-years. He and the other QB's deserve the opportunity, and I believe they are talented enough to compete / start / play. I believe if Oregon brings in a graduate transfer then 2 and possibly 3 of the current QB's will leave quickly.

Love this post! Reasonable expectations that are nicely articulated.
Thankful for all Schooler did for us and I am happy he is going to continue his career at AZ, but he rarely made big plays. I think this WR group will be much improved and I expect Pittman qnd JJ III to be at the top of the league. Sad to see Redd miss the Rose Natty...
I agree on every other point. I think Lewis needs to go. If he can't kick it in the end zone and he is unreliable on FGs, we have a real weakness there. We passed on probably eight or ten legitimate field goal tries that a decent kicker with a good leg could have made.
They are out there! It needs to be a priority. At this stage, I doubt Lewis finds those five yards to get touchbacks...
Go Ducks!

Wasn’t Maimone the punter a senior also? I have not seen his name come up as a loss yet, but if he is that is a big one. He killed it this this year IMO. We have not had what he brought in a long time. He is the unsung hero of the season.
