It begins with Lanning looking in the mirror and accepting the fact he has limited experiences coaching defense and even then it was an elite team.

His story is a perfect example of how resumes get all twisted around to ignore reality.

Lanning came to Georgia in 2018 from Memphis to coach OLB.

Mel Tucker leaves to be the HC at Colorado so Lanning gets promoted to DC / OLB from 2019-21.

In 2017, before Lanning arrived, Georgia was #6 in the nation in both Total and Scoring Defense...no doubt in part due to Kirby Smart being the DC at Alabama from 2008-15.

Lanning did not build / create Georgia's defense. He inherited it. Kind of like the rich kid who gets a BMW for his 16th birthday because his parents are wealthy.

So yes by all appearancea he managed well what he inherited which afforded him the opportunity to get hired as the HC at Oregon...nobody seriously believes he would have got the Oregon job if he had been the DC at Vanderbilt.

Likewise he has done well with what he inherited at Oregon...exceptions being the uw and osu games.

Once he accepts his blind spots and hires accordingly...the whole ragged structure / chain of command needs to change...Lupoi and Powledge were co-DC's with supposedly a DC oriented HC. Too many people dividing up what should be one person's job.

Chip Kelly let Nick Aliotti handle the defense. Willie Taggart inherited a messed up Oregon team; hired an older, EXPERIENCED defensive coach in Jim Leavitt and then got out of his way.

Lanning needs to stop hiring kids like himself(Lupoi is only 5-years older than Lanning; Powledge is one or two years younger than Lanning) and like his new OC and instead HIRE EXPERIENCE not potential.🙏
