I am taking a wild swing this is a mutual understanding between McCormick and Lanning.
I can see in a gracious context Lanning basically saying 7 years and 2 degrees is enough at one school.
Plus with Oregon already over the scholarship limit and it is clear McCormick is not now or will be the starting every down TE...even with 2 years of eligibility remaining.
Wish him the best luck. Great story of perseverance. Please don't transfer to another Pac-12 school...although I am curious if Dillingham needs a TE in his rebuild.

He has hit his ceiling at UO, Lanning/Stein wanting to get "their" players some minutes rather than logjam a position with I believe a Helf holdover (?)...

massive thank you to Cam for making that shoestring tackle after the Utah INT back in November. that play and two gritty stands by the D saved us from what would have been a brutal loss. and I can't remember the last time I was that cold (& damp) in Autzen . . . 1985 CW?
the TE room is almost empty right now. Matavao to Chip & BruCru is probably the biggest loss via transfer portal (Justin Flowe, maybe, but he was oft-injured and frequently out-of-position when in the game). Ferguson is a reliable pass-catcher, esp in the red zone, but his blocking needs improvement. P Herbs is coming along nicely, but has battled injuries, too.
the unit was devastated by injuries in 2021 (brought DJ Johnson over from the D). its improvement this year was a big component in a dominating rush game and the low number of sacks yielded. love that Jumbo package with two TEs on the LoS and a third in the backfield.
hope that the brain-trust in the HD has its eye on a transfer candidate. don't think Sadiq, a 220-lb true frosh, is going to contribute right away. gotta have some more depth here in 2023.
