It is still about coaching. One co-DC moved on but Lanning and Lupoi remain.
The talent level was not deep and talented but it wasn't horrible. Yet it progressively got worse as the season went along.
It is not unreasonable to expect with the talent level of Oregon that an entire unit would improve over the course of the season... not Oregon on the defensive side of the ball...even though Lanning's background is on defense?!? As limited as it might be.
So if the key coaching staff is returning(Lanning and Lupoi)...what is going to make 2023 better?
We saw the EXACT same thing happen with Cristobal on offense at Oregon...no matter what he did or didn't do...coaching, hiring assistants, recruiting, etc. it stayed the same...and many would argue it became worse post-Herbert.
I hope Lanning is not going to be the same with the defense🙏

cupboard is more than full with experienced talent and young studs. I would expect to lose a few players at these positions to the transfer portal after Spring Practice. at the same time, there will be multiple senior starters whose eligibility ends after this season, so sticking around for an opportunity to start 2024 might be tempting for some.
Funa has the size, skills, and football-smarts to move to inside LB, and pairs nicely w Keith Brown in the interior. Jeffrey Bassa, experienced but smaller, could slide outside. as Coach Camp said about UGA in the chat w Tyson Alger, mix & match the pieces, move them around, get the best athletes on the field for the situation.
