Whither Altman?

I think that Altman is a great basketball coach.  Hall of Famer.

As it stands, there are two types of basketball teams:

* Programs- teams with players who commit and stay as upper classmen, recruiting focused to reload
* Factories- teams with players with one foot out the door upon signing, recruiting to rebuild annual roster upheaval

Altman is recruiting and running a basketball factory when his real talent is in coaching a program.  There is a definite contrast with his early seasons coaching here versus the last few.  His system and philosophy require maturity and continuity and it just ain't happening of late.

I think it would be a bad look to fire a guy like this, which is why I post here to ask if you think he might be better off simply retiring and then resurfacing again at a mid-major team in a year or two?

Re: Whither Altman?

Good question / topic.

In contrast to Wayne Tinkle at osu who is like 50 games BELOW .500 in Conference games during his tenure, Altman is like 70 games OVER .500 in Conference games in his tenure. All things considered, Altman has weathered his 13-years at Oregon pretty well.

You still have to put him in the top third or close to it of head coaches in the Pac-12...and with the impending departure of UCLA and USC...after Arizona and who is better?

But he turns 65 in June and maybe 13-years is enough? Time for a change? Fresh voice? New look? Altman himself in OLive articles has talked about struggling to "get through" to the team with his messages.

I kind of think he has earned the opportunity to "mutually part ways" vs being fired.

Yet both the men and women teams have lost significant mojo these past couple of years...neither should be struggling as much as they are. That is on the head coaches.

One thought I have is seeing how Altman does post-Will Richardson who has hurt the team as much as he has helped them i.e. he doesn't make the players around him better...in my opinion.

Yet Altman's insistence on starting / playing Richardson even when he is hurting the team(see recent series against WSU and uw) is mind boggling.

So whatever gripes I have about Richardson goes full circle back to Altman.

It is not an easy situation with clear answers but ultimately he probably deserves another year but the program needs a different vibe...ditto for the women too.

Re: Whither Altman?

Today is senior day for the Ducks.  Richardson, Dante, Couisnard, Guerrier and Soares are playing in their last game.  However, Richardson is through with his college career.  I didn't realize that the other players still have a year of eligibility remaining.  I doubt Dante would return for another year.  I have never felt confident in Guerrier and Soares when their on the court.  Will have to see how all of this plays out.  And concerning Altman, I would give him at least another year to see if he can fix this basketball program.

It's really a successful tenure for Dana looking back each season. I looked up the national recruiting rankings for each season and put them at the front. Of course looking back a couple seasons makes sense with the exception of years with rookies playing a lot.

First number national recruiting rank for the incoming season
48th 2008
56th 2009
88th 2010-11   24-10   CBI Champions.  Defeated Creighton, Altman's former team.
30th 2011-12   28-9     NIT quarterfinal
39th 2012-13   28-9     sweet 16
34th 2013-14   24-10   round of 32
29th 2014-15   26-10   round of 32
26th 2015-16   31-7     elite 8
25th 2016-17   33-6     final 4
12th 2017-18   23-13   NIT 2nd round
3rd 2018-19   25-13   sweet 16
5th 2019-20   24-7     season cancelled - covid
23rd 2020-21   21-7     sweet 16
38th 2021-22   20-15   NIT 2nd round
56th 2022
4th 2023 - Just commits at this point

Re: Whither Altman?

I have also read somewhere that Oregon has lost its Canadian connection...forget the name of the assistant coach who got a lot of credit for those Canadian recruits but has since moved on.

For whatever reasons...one of which is the Covid year...after 5 consecutive years of making the NCAA Tournament, it has been back and forth between the NCAA and NIT tournaments.

With their current record of 18-13, I believe the only way Oregon can make the NCAA Tournament is by winning the Pac-12 Tournament...which Altman has done previously while not being the favorite.

Otherwise it could be back to back NIT appearances for the first time in his tenure.

Re: Whither Altman?

The name of the basketball coach is Tony Stubblefield.  He was Dana Altman's assistant from 2010 through 2021.  He became a head coach at DePaul University in Chicago.  He was responsible for all the Canadian players that came to Oregon.  He will be sorely missed.

Thanks! I remember him. Googled it...2-years at DePaul and it looks pretty rough for him..finished 10th and 9th in the Big East...9-31 in Conference play.

I have to imagine his path is a VERY CHALLENGING one having worked at Oregon for a decade then taking a head coaching job at a private faith based(Catholic) college in a big city(Chicago).

Hopefully he can turn it around.
