Big 12 looking to poach Pac?

I think the longer it takes to get a media deal together, and it has certainly dragged on, we will begin to see schools wavering on staying in the PAC.
"There is a saying that I’ve grown quite fond of lately that fits well with the Pac-12’s current situation: “Well, if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.”The Pac-12’s previous leadership was uninspiring — to put it nicely — and the ongoing media rights negotiations have not gone well for the current leadership. Because of this, other conferences smell blood in the water."

Re: Big 12 looking to poach Pac?

that is sooooooooooooo Dueña Alphonsa.

it's convenient to blame 'previous leadership' for the current ills. certainly Larry Scott deserves some of the blame. but the path he chose was approved by the member ADs, and by their presidents and chancellors (looking at you, Ed Ray). for the principal stakeholders, academics and tradition outweighed how much revenue could be churned by selling their collective souls to the broadcast networks 3000 miles away.

problem is and always has always been that the product lacks broad-based sizzle. Oregon football & SC football. Zona basketball; sometimes UCLA basketball. Absolutely nobody wants to pay premium dinero to watch OS & Cal play football or Stanford & Wazzu play basketball. that was one of the big sticking points in DirectTV's refusal to carry the Pac-12 Networks; DT wanted to offer its subscribers a more cafeteria, a la carte option (kinda like Apple TV or Amazon).

so right now it's a game of blink-chicken. the Four Corners schools have to entertain bolting for the Big 12 before UO, UW, and possibly others bolt for the B1G. and vice versa.

best possible outcome right now would be a short-term (one- or two-year) media-rights contract that realizes about $30 million per school per year, compatible with the new Big 12 deal. don't know how reliable the sources are for this piece from yesterday, but the outlook is plenty cheerful . . .

I can't see a media rights company going for a short term deal. Everybody will use some streaming, but most B1G and SEC games will be on cable. Say we get $30 million a year. Here are two articles detailing the amounts the SEC and B1G will pay member schools. If, and I do say if, these numbers hold, I do not see how the PAC stays relevant for very long. Maybe George will pull a rabbit from a hat..guess we'll see.
With annual revenue reaching more than $1.1 billion, divided by 16 schools, including new additions USC and UCLA in 2024, the per-school payouts could reach $70 million or more.

=21.6pxTheir research projects the Big Ten projecting $75 million per school per year by 2025 and the SEC crossing $100 million per school by 2028.

Re: Big 12 looking to poach Pac?

Gotta admit, I am plumb worn out by the media rights drama/debacle/fiasco.

I keep falling back to the fact the Pac (whatever) will still get a seat (maybe 2?) at the Playoff table.

If Oregon can be the Pac(whatever) King of the Hill and reap the playoff rewards that follow, won't that soothe much of our considerable monetary and "fear of being left behind" angst?

(sorry for word salad lol)

Another opinion piece from an LA writer. I put these up for info and discussion. I don't necessarily agree with the writers.

"USC and UCLA could have made a decision to preserve the college sports map for the greater good, but that would have been bad business — at least, if the L.A. schools want to be in the business of competing for football national championships in the modern era."

Disagree with this statement. They got the "business" part right but If USC/UCLA's goal is to win National Championships, they just shot themselves in the foot with this move IMO.

More chatter and not of the good kind https://www.yahoo.com/news/big-12-expansion-arizona-arizona-165027436.html

I'm so sick of hearing about rumors and no deal in site. The latest has supposed sources saying they think the Big 12 will be successful luring away some schools. If so it seems like game over for the Pac. This is just all talk. I've been trying to stay away for giving too much thought about the rumor mill. Just venting a little bit.

HIring GK was suppose to be a major plus for negotiating a new deal. He's been dealt a bad hand, however he's the one to mainly blame if some school gets poached before a deal it brokered. When the news broke of the LA schools leaving last summer I thought we'd be waiting a few months to figure a new deal out.

Re: Big 12 looking to poach Pac?

Always important to remember, GK works under the direction of the now 10 schools.

So presumably he keeps everyone updated and then they tell him what they want him to pursue.

Dueling issues which are connected to each other but separately are challenging...media rights and expansion.

Personally I think he is negotiating with one arm tied behind his back...no Los Angeles.

There would already be a media rights deal if USC and UCLA had not sucker punched the Conference...losing Los Angeles is a HUGE deal vs say had Oregon and osu bolted(Eugene and Corvallis).

Hoping for the best.🙏
