The issue of the importance or necessity of having an "identity" can be debated but the statistics / facts noted don't lie.
While no coach is going to spell out detailed specifics which could help future opponents...I was hoping for a little more from Lanning...something of substance beyond the new players and the expected "competition" for playing time.
Because just bringing in new players when 2 of the 3 primary "defensive coaches"(Lanning and Lupoi) are returning from an underwhelming defense last season...I don't know.
I still believe Kirby Smart who was Alabama's DC from 2008-15 had more to do with Georgia's defensive successes than Lanning which is the same dynamic I was hoping for when Lanning became the head coach at Oregon.

Duck defense played exceptionally well at times last year. was instrumental in securing big Ws against very good QBs v BYU, BruCru, and Utes. cooled a future NFL QB to win the bowl game. Funa's game-sealing takeaway v Cougs. TOs that set up the O deep in OS territory (needed to finish those w TDs, not FGs or downs).
obvious weaknesses . . .
lack of pressure off the edge. Dorlus was uge coming up the middle, but nobody got pressure from outside or kept contain on scrambling QBs. frustrating to play two good snaps and then give up a 3rd-and-long time after time. new players, transfer and recruit, should help there.
safety play. lack of recognition, bad tackling, poor run support. transfer Evan Williams and returner Jamal Hill are seniors. Kyree Jackson from Bama is a senior transfer CB who can rotate to nickel or safety.
w Popo and Dorlus anchoring the middle, this will be a talented & experienced D. I'm concerned about depth if we get hit by an injury bug, but that's always the case. expectations are running high among season-ticketholders right now. Lanning has accomplished what he needed to do in the "off-season".
every Top 10 team in the CFB final rankings gave up 40 or more points in a game last year. some more than once. doesn't pay to get too wrapped up in "statistics". will be interesting to see if much changes with the new time rules, or if the college game remains "grass basketball".
not having an "identity" just doesn't feel like a defining moment to me. although I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about it. get some stops in the red-zone, get off the field on 3rd-and-long, get some takeaways. Go Ducks!
