Ware to the Transfer Portal

As the NCAA Tournament has proven, you don't need to be a blue blood school to do well.

John Calipari is often regarded as the elite recruiter in getting 5* / one and done talent to come to Kentucky. He began there in 2009 and has won exactly 1 NCAA Championship(2012) during his tenure...so no titles in over a decade for a school routinely viewed as having very good roster talent.

For me Altman has so many issues, I am not sure where to start but perhaps recruiting a DIFFERENT type of player would help🙏

Remember when Oregon lost to UCI in November by 13 points? Only to beat them recently in the NIT by 26.

I compared the box scores and of an assortment of interesting stats...

1) Dante led Oregon in rebounding with 9 in 28 minutes. He was a starter. Tyrone Williams who also has entered the Transfer Portal, came off the bench in the second meeting and got 11 rebounds in 25 minutes! In the first game he was Oregon's second leading rebounder with 7 while also coming off the bench and playing just 17 minutes.

2) First game Oregon had 10 assists; second game they had 16.

3) Richardson played the first game for 31 minutes...second most on the team...and poured in 4 points. Team lost by 13. Didn't play the second game as didn't Dante and the team won by 26. Hello!

Re: Ware to the Transfer Portal

Altmans coaching of Richardson the last 3 years should be enough of a red flag for even the strongest of Altman apologists.

Ware leaving is the most unsurprising event of the year. He looked miserable the first time he stepped on the floor in an Oregon uniform.

That being said, I assume he will become first team All-American at his next stop.

Re: Ware to the Transfer Portal

I wholeheartedly agree that Oregon/Altman needs to revisit the type of player they are recruiting.  Signing Top 100 players is great, but many of those players believe they are just one season away from being a first round draft pick, so they really do nothing but mail it in academically and athletically just to bide their time and get some tape for their draft profile.  No loyalty or dedciation to the program, just to themsleves.  I get that as it is a byproduct of a broken model by the NBA and the NCAA.  Once again, it really seems that there needs to be a baseball rule in place for basketball, especially since a developmental minor league option is available for players right out of HS (but that is a rabbit hole not related to this topic).

I was pretty much over the whole "one and done" deal after Bol Bol.  And seeing how the tourney played out over the last few seasons including this one, the proof is there that "programs" are trumping the "factories."

In Oregon's case, signing top classes are clearly not putting butts in seats.  And no butts in seats translates to diminished revenue.  And diminished revenue gets tied to the AD, who rolls that downhill on to the coach.

If Oregon expects to be a championship program, it will take time to break it down and rebuild.  I think Altman is the guy to do that, but you gotta let him have a longer leash so as to develop players again who may be more loyal as players as well as students.

I guess...?
