Will Stein's first interview with the media

All these years I was frustrated with or blamed play calling for Oregon's issues on offense...only to now learn "plays are highly overrated."

"Overrated" I MIGHT be able to understand but "highly overrated?"

In order for your best players to get the ball as often as possible, I guess it is overrated to believe the OC needs to decide which PLAYS can make that happen based on what they observe is happening in the game. In addition to calling plays which you believe your offense can best execute at that moment...given what is happening in the game.

So if part of your job, at least as I have always understood it, is highly overrated, then what is as important or more DURING A GAME?

Oregon is in an interesting situation where the QB is more experienced and knowledgeable than the OC.

After listening to Stein's "logic," I am now hoping Nix gets to call his own plays.🙏 And hoping Oregon is not forced to use a backup QB🤔

Re: Will Stein's first interview with the media

"It's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimmies and Joes"...applied to recruiting, but also relevant to play calling. We'll see.

Re: Will Stein's first interview with the media

Mike Leach had 'plays'. he ran the same plays over and over for 21 years at three P-5 schools. recruited players to fit his system. never won an outright division championship. never played in a conf championship game. blamed his players when he lost. 21 years.

I hope Will Stein and Junior Adams are adapting their offensive framework to fit the skills of their players. Nix is talented and smart, but he has limitations, which is why he's not interviewing w NFL scouts right now.
I expect to see a more traditional, NFL-style pocket-passing game, with fewer designed QB runs, both to protect Nix and because Novosad projects as a conventional pocket-passer. Adams is WR coach in addition to co-offensive coordinator, and he has a stable of talented receivers.
I want to see more throws past the chains and fewer of those underneaths that went nowhere on 3rd downs last year. or in the red zone.

good piece on the same platform about Nix's 'interview' with Stein. says Bo was still undetermined about coming back for another year, although I heard differently at the time.

Re: Will Stein's first interview with the media

I kinda read his comment as more or less that he will draw up the final playbook after he figures out what players he has instead of simply running a certain style of offense (run-n-shoot, West Coast, Wing T option, etc).  Pretty sure he has a catalog of plays in hand, but what plays make the final edition will depend on the players.  Think that is reasonable, just not terribly eloquently stated...

Yeah, I gotta say Stein's comment about plays being overrated definitely raised my WTF antennae lol.

Let's hope he doesn't literally mean that?
