Mike White story on ESPN

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/37721644/wcws-college-softball-texas-coach-mike-white-journey

long and interesting piece about former UO softball coach. he did some great things here at Oregon and lifted the program out of the doldrums. but I was very happy when Mullens didn't accede to his demand$ and let him walk to Texas. it is, after all, only softball.

Re: Mike White story on ESPN

For a guy with a business background, he was terrible at the art of negotiation.  From what I recall of the reporting at the time, he fudged the numbers on both sides of the table and ended up losing any upper hand in the process.  Oregon balked at his lack of good faith and Texas signed him for far less than he was claiming they were offering.  And Oklahoma is still the pinnacle of the sport...

Re: Mike White story on ESPN

Yeah I didn't appreciate White taking shots at Oregon athletic administrators... especially since Oregon gave him his first softball coaching opportunities as an assistant and then head coach. To say nothing of a massive upgrade in facilities.

The fact that White at Texas, arguably one of most financially deep pocketed athletic programs in the USA if not the most, has done nothing of significance in softball since his hiring, speaks to Oregon's wisdom at letting him go.

Now, Lombardi is not exactly setting the softball world on notice either...best Pac-12 finish is 3rd place and she has a losing record in conference play...first year 5-19 record is a key factor. Yet throw out that record and no conference games the Covid year...her last 3 seasons she is 38-34 in conference games.

Yes the Pac-12 is very competitive BUT White won 5 Conference Championships during his tenure.
