This is the last thing former UO President Michael Schill expected

Top notch academic school; button down "clean" head football coach...Schill has his plate very full now on an issue I am certain he was never anticipating.

In fact, he is already walking back his initial decision on the status of Pat Fitzgerald.

I don't think this will impact his(Schill)job status but you never know. He hasn't even been on the job a year!

Always kinda liked Schill. Was sorry to see him leave.

It's refreshing to hear him say he may have made a mistake with his original penalties.

Personally, I didn't like the response from the coach and team. Basically, denying anything happened and villainizing the people reporting the abuse. Taking no responsibility and making no apologies.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

it was less than a decade ago when Northwestern football players--Fitzgerald was HC--attempted to form a union. the issues were compensation, working hours & conditions, multi-year scholarships, concussions, and a host of other familiar complaints.
they never formed a union . . . but that was the beginning of a snowball that changed college athletics. in the end, they won on every count.

sounds like Schill and NW are staring down the barrel of some major lawsuits unless they get on this right away. the tOSU Wrestling / sexual abuse scandal just got cracked open again w an appeals court ruling. not the type of distractions college football needs.

Fitz is officially canned.  Schill had really no option this early in his tenure than to dismiss him with the evidence piling up.  The cleanup with the lawsuits and settlements will take years to resolve, and cleaning house today just makes that easier to deal with.

Re: This is the last thing former UO President Michael Schill expected

It seems to have been one of those no-excuse situations for Fitzgerald...you are the head coach and either you knew SOMETHING and did nothing or IF you didn't know anything you should have....stuff is happening IN THE LOCKER ROOM and through any channel available(players, coaches, staff, etc.) you never hear a single word let alone see anything year after year? It is simply not believable.

As I heard one sports analyst say...NW wasn't winning games with Fitzgerald recently(the last 2 years were a combined 4-20) and they certainly won't win with him and this issue hanging over the program.

This situation combined with the Transfer Portal and NIL is not going to be kind to Northwestern football.

I keep thinking we are past the era of hazing but I guess not unfortunately.

Tough situation for Schill but terminating Fitzgerald was the best decision.

Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University is almost as good as the University of Oregon School of Journalism & Communication (almost).
the kids were the ones who blew this thing to pieces, and signed their names. that took some serious stanes.
https://dailynorthwestern.com/

with all the changes in college athletics in recent years, programs (esp football) are drifting further and further away from the schools they purportedly represent. I know, it's always been this way: Don James ran a semi-pro, semi-criminal enterprise for years at UW. but it's accelerating.
we'll be reading more of these types of stories in the coming years . . . what the NCAA used to call 'a lack of institutional control'.
