Lanning gets a contract extension after 1 year!?!

Sorry but coaching one season while losing to the uw; osu; not playing for the Conference Championship and "only" getting to the Holiday Bowl does not warrant a base salary increase from $4.7 million to $7 million even if it comes via "philanthropic support."

Perfect example of what is wrong with college football and it is just as damaging as everyone's favorite targets...NIL and the Transfer Portal.

Meh.  It’s all a numbers game.  They extended him and are shelling out top dollar only for the hope that he sticks around when the conference chaos unfolds.  I’m not enamored by the guy, he seems to be a good guy but not a CEO personality who pisses excellence.  Time will tell.  My guess is he is long gone in the next 2-3 years when A&M opens up or another head rolls in the SEC.

Re: Lanning gets a contract extension after 1 year!?!

gotta live in the real world, not the one we wish could be.

money is guaranteed all the way to 2028, with automatic one-year extensions each season he wins 10+ games. the $20-mill buyout remains in place throughout the contract; in most other contracts the buyout increments downward as the years go by, so that's a new wrinkle.

in short, the powers-that-be have decided that Lanning is their guy, and that Oregon sees itself as a peer to the SEC and B1G powers. and that's the message the contract sends to recruits, transfers, and asst coaches, and to other schools that might want to poach.

I'm more concerned about whatever conference realignment comes down the road. Oregon in a diminished Pac-NN is a glorified Fresno State. if Lanning is successful, other schools will come calling, and $20-mill is chicken-feed for those boosters. he's a young man who might want to jump to a level where he can get a game.

streets of gold, ain't that red dirt clay,
leave some peaches in a basket by the Pearly Gates,
when my race is run, hear that angel sound,
may the Good Lord show me mercy, send me back down South.

I don't like it either, but this is what needed to be done to not have to find a new coach in a year 2.

Like it or not coaches are getting huge money and teams are always looking to poach a coach. Especially one that can recruit. Example: Mario

The Ducks have a good season and DL could be gone.

Like Mac said the lack of contract is a huge issue that could play in to DL wanting to bolt. The Ducks could think to stick around the "Pac 9" + small potatoes add on. The national perception outside of the remaining schools might be that this isn't a power 5 conference anymore.  With that in mind it could be a lot harder to recruit and it's hard to see DL wanting to stay.

All that being said it doesn't seem like DL is the next Kirby Smart or Nick Saban. Time will tell.

The problem is we found out the Ducks aren't a top tier destination for coaches.  A favorite and best option in the eyes of many Ducks fans was to hire Justin Wilcox last time. This year when the coaches rating came out he came in 9th place in the Pac and I didn't here anyone defending him. Keep in mind we couldn't even get Justin Wilcox! They tried a second time to persuade him before the DL hire.

The amount of money is for unproven coaches is certainly ridiculous along with a lot of other things in the sports world.

Re: Lanning gets a contract extension after 1 year!?!

Amongst all the craziness and instability in college football right now, Oregon wanted to at least lock down the stability within its own program. If this were normal times, i think they wait another year before extending him.

I think it's the right move and I'm fine with it.

All this crap has really put a damper on my enthusiasm for what was shaping up to be the best pac12 conference season in forever. Feels like we'll be playing under a dark cloud all year. Hopefully my mood will change once play begins.
