Okay, enough of the crazy, stupid, reality-show, Pac-blah shenanigans. How about football! It is Saturday, and in just 3 weeks P State will be in Autzen, roughly about this time. Where are you confident and where are you ready to PANIC about the team, position wise, going into the first game (gasp!).
QUARTERBACK - A (starter)
Nix is solid, one of the best QB's returning in the conference. Huge drop off from there. Can Ty get his sh*t together this year and perform to his star rating? Will Novosad see the field? Others? I'm hoping we can put up enough score to pull Nix by the 4th quarter and get reps for the next in line. But I said that last year.
RUNNING BACKS - A
Irving, Whittington and James gives us probably the best group in conference. I feel very good about this if the O line can provide blocking. We have a couple of promising names (Dowdell, Bynum, etc) as well. Will they see turf?
RECEIVING CORP - "SOFT" A / B+
Franklin and Johnson are solid, Hutson was on and off last year. Looks like we have some other solid transfers that might? be able to step up. Lot's of speed if we can get the ball to them in space.
TIGHT ENDS - B / C
Ferg is solid, I'm hoping Hebert has a breakout year. The others I have no idea.
OFFENSIVE LINE - ??
Last season it could be argued we had the best O line in the Pac, an easy A+ and one of the top 10? in the country. Many from that squad are gone. We have a few returners (Jones, Delgado, Power-J, Harper) and I'm excited to see Conerly Jr. get reps. Can this group gel to step into big shoes and give Nix time and the backs running lanes? Do we need a variation on the air-raid to get Nix to release the ball fast?
DEFENSIVE LINE - B / C
I thought we had a pretty solid defense in stopping the run. But absolutely horrid stats in pass rush and getting off the field in third-and-anything but short. Rogers is a known quality inside, Ware-Hudson and Aumavae outside. Lots of newbies - again can this unit gel?
DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD - C
How could it be worse? Outside of Gonzalez, and the occasional and inconsistent show of talent in Addison, Bridges, Stephens and Manning I would have graded the unit a solid D (and that's not for defense). Do we have enough incoming portal transfers to shore this group up and play to a B? We will face some hard & fast throwing QB's.
SPECIAL TEAMS - B (field goals) and D (punting and coverage)
Cam is back, so I will sleep at night thinking 3's are good (not that I don't want TD's every time in the red zone). Beyond that, we were so bad last year, and lost games for it. Not enough sample size of practice reviews for me to have sense of the new kickers. Dunne and Rigney are both from down-under, so I'm thinking maybe we get some sidewinder soccer style punting? Can we get better coverage in the downfield attack?
Have your take at it, re-grade, down-grade as you see fit. I'm probably a bit optimistic so I'm not thinking any of you will upgrade. GO DUCKS!!

I'll mention Linebackers; we lost two highly regarded LBs, but I honestly think our transfers and returners will make this position much better. Neither Noah or Flowe really fit what Lanning wants in a LB, someone who can go sideline to sideline and cover backs, as well as attack the run. At RB, it might be hard to keep Dowdell off the field. I have no idea if Ty or Austin will be the backup, but we need to develope somebody in case Bo goes down.
TE is a concern, with Ferg being the obvious #1, and I too am hoping Herbert can break out this year.
I do believe our D line play will be better, and the secondary will be as well.
Getting close...GO DUCKS!!!

Mostly concerned about O line, back-up QB and defensive backfield.
We have massive bodies on O line, decent amount of experience and plenty of talent. But how good is Terry as coach? Oregon's success will hinge on O line play, period.
I have found it strange that Lanning went out of his way to praise the development of Novosad this summer. But I haven't heard a peep about Thompson. Is it possible that Ty will be 3rd string?? It honestly wouldn't shock me but that would be a sad statement about Ty that even after 3 offensive coordinators and 4 years in the program, that he still cant figure things out. One of these guys HAVE to be ready because you have to figure Bo will get dinged up at some point.
Defensive backfield I just have to have faith that the staff has coached these guys up because on paper the talent seems on the thin side. On the plus side I think the massive amount of depth on the D line and what I expect to be a much better pass rush will help the DB's out tremendously.
I actually think we might be surprised at LB. Flowe was abysmal last year and Sewell was painfully one dimensional. We get our best LB back in Bassa and Jackson looks like he could be a beast. Plus we got the Iowa transfer who's on the Butkus award list. Depth will be an issue. Sounds like Tuoti could be a baller if called upon.
I too hope Herbert has a breakout year. It's a mystery to why he never gets talked about, Does he still have lingering health issues? Whenever he's in game all he does is catch every pass and make positive plays.
Special teams have sucked at Oregon for so long now, ANY improvement will be welcomed. Lorig needs to show why Lanning thinks he's the bees knees. Last year he was the least impressive coach on the staff.
Speaking of coaches, Lupoi is coaching for his job this year as far as I'm concerned. He makes way too much money and we have too much talent to not be at least a better than average defense.
So many questions and concerns this year. But I also think we could have an awesome season if the coaching matches the talent.
Ready for some football because this off-season has sucked some serious balls!

Going out on a limb....Ducks beat the Condoms in the last PAC12 championship and advance to the playoffs. They have the right team if good coaching kicks in. Like a bad case of hemorrhoids, the Ducks continue to come back to pain SC and steal the best players in CA for years to come in the BIG10! Can't wait for the season to start! GO DUCKS!

Between returnees, transfers and recruits(although I am always guarded about all the hype) and 85 scholarship players...there is plenty of talent and probably more so than 80% of the teams in the country and two-thirds of the Pac-12.
Plus the Ducks have players in all positions on offense with talent AND experience who can score the ball.
So for me it is primarily about the coaching and specifically 4 areas...
1) Can Lanning do a much better job with field position decisions, clock management and play calling in tight games(see uw, osu and even Utah last year)?
2) Will Oregon's goofy defensive coaching structure...a defensive oriented head coach and 2 Co-Defensive Coordinators produce better results?
3) Who is Will Stein?
4) Will we see a MUCH NEEDED improvement in special teams play?
This is LANNING'S TEAM now...very little of significance remains from MC's last year or at least in comparison to what Lanning has done with the roster in just over 18-months. It is time for the coaching staff to take it to the next level.

Some comments from Lanning concerning the first scrimmage of fall camp...

Despite all the starters leaving I'm actually feeling the O-line should be decent. Some miscues might be present to start the season and all with new players. The talent, size, and the amount of players still around that got meaning full reps should help. Barring major injuries I except the unit to perform well and might start questing the coaching if not.
With the defense fresh with talented recruits and transfers of the coaches liking there's no more excuses. The Ducks where about the worst 3rd down team in the country last year. They were way too talented last year to have dismal numbers. Speaking of that Noah Sewell is off to a fantastic start for the Bears. He's in a position of possibly even starting. Besides his strength the Chicago coaches keep raving about his football IQ. Good for him, it makes me question the coaches though.
Let's hope one of the new kicker's can kick a punt 50 yards for a change. It's just been cringy at times watching our kickers get only 30 yards at times and then watching the Ducks compete against lower level talents that have kickers that can kick bombs.

Yeah, at least the Ducks get to keep making the poor babies cry! It's comical reading the USC fans saying it's not fair that the Ducks are joining the B1G!
