Canzano column on the drowning of Herman Ho-Ching😭

Re: Canzano column on the drowning of Herman Ho-Ching😭

one of the worst mistakes Mike Bellotti and Gary Campbell ever made. Ho-Ching could not leave his past behind; quit school and the team only two years in, his on-field performance hampered by his weed use. timing couldn't have been worse; Ducks started 5-0 in 1998 and actually led #2 UCLA in Q4 in the Rose Bowl. but Reuben Droughns broke his leg in that game, Ducks lost in OT, and finished 8-4 w/o a functioning tailback.

Bellotti and Mike Riley were always willing to take a chance on kids from tough neighborhoods w academic issues. UO and OS didn't compete for many blue-chip high schoolers back in the day & had to take what they could get. Oregon filled its tailback position w a succession of JC transfers: Sollie McCullough, Droughns, Mo Morris, Original Whizz. Akili was a JC transfer.

some of the kids w background issues worked out-Saul Patu, Rodney Woods, Samie Parker (a teammate of Ho-Ching at Long Beach Poly). so many others didn't.

this is one hell of a story. Ho-Ching is mentioned twice. once by name--he fumbled five times in a HS game when Poly traveled to Vegas and the kids broke curfew and partied all night. the other time indirectly: two juniors on the offensive team bus started smoking weed as soon as they rolled out of LA and were Vegas-bound. kinda predictive.

Re: Canzano column on the drowning of Herman Ho-Ching😭

I remember Chip Kelly saying once(at Oregon) that if you can get a program to a high level then you don't need to give second chances to questionable players from other teams.

Oregon has actually been pretty good on that front post-Helfraud who allowed the standards Kelly established to deteriorate...Taggart, Cristobal and now Lanning have stayed clear of that issue.

Of course the Transfer Portal is the land of second chances(and even third and fourth chances)...BUT not everyone was a problem with their previous team. Many just want an opportunity to play more.

So coaches can be VERY SELECTIVE on who they extend offers to in the Transfer Portal.🙏

Lol. That's good.

As long as it doesn't say "here lies Duckball, keeled over the night before the Ducks finally won the Big One!"
