Re: Notes from Lannings last presser before Portland State..

About what we will expect with each presser every week.  Excited to play, guys working hard, putting players in positions to succeed, etc. Think he just wants to get thru this week with a healthy margin of victory with little to no injuries...  Season really starts with Texas Tech on the road, that will give us a bit more about who this team is...

Yep, Lanning is even more tight lipped than Mario. TT will be a good test, and while I think the O will be fine, it's the D I remain concerned with.

Re: Notes from Lannings last presser before Portland State..

Lanning falls into that category of many head coaches who say almost nothing of substance when they talk.

They have their cookie cutter comments / style and rarely stray from them.

The irony is their elusiveness in answering questions, especially post game, doesn't fool anyone who watched the game in question.😂

We all saw what happened against the uw and osu last year...for me, I just wanted Lanning to man-up on how he contributed to those ugly losses...but he didn't. No surprise.

Which is why I stopped paying attention to his post game chatter about halfway through last season(did the same with Cristobal)...I will read articles in which he obviously will be quoted but I cannot recall the last time I watched a pre or post game press conference.

Chip Kelly is the only head coach I would watch EVERY press conference possible because at the very least I knew he would be entertaining while engaging with the media.

Re: Notes from Lannings last presser before Portland State..

Generally every coach has boring press conferences. The ones who don't are usually characters or kind of off the wall and typically not coaching a big team. I.E. & R.I.P. Mike Leach

DL is a lot like Mario in saying absolutely nothing. He will open up a little bit more than Mario did about his family and personal life.

For this Saturday's game my question is if the Ducks get way ahead are they going to put in a backup QB for some actuel meaningful drives? It would be nice to see a backup get in for more than just handing the ball off the last drive of the game. They need to keep Bo healthy for that matter.

Re: Notes from Lannings last presser before Portland State..

the 1994 Rose Bowl Ducks opened the season v Portland State. Rich Brooks (and OC Mike Bellotti) gave backup QB Tony Graziani reps with the 1s in the first half (he threw a pick-6, if I remember right). proved to be a wise decision about a month later, when Danny O was dinged and Graz helmed the Ducks to a 22-7 win v Tommy at the Coliseum, although that was mostly Gang Green.

I want to see Bo on the sidelines early (not just Sat, but as much as possible during the first month-and-a-half), and I want to see Ty and Austin get some meaningful reps, and throw the ball past the chains to this deep corps of WRs. I hope the entire staff will resist the temptation to pile up gaudy stats for a 'Heisman campaign'.

I'll be watching how the new pieces fit on D, how much pressure the coaches dial up on obvious passing downs, and how we use our TEs. given the opponent, the Ducks could just go heavy and grind out an uneventful win, not giving next week's opponent any film to work with. or not. will also be watching for some improvement in special teams, even against the Viks.

actually going to the game Sat. original plan was two rounds at Tok-a-Tee on Sun & Mon, but the forest fires have temporarily closed the course. so maybe a combo-pack of Emerald V and Trysting Tree.

Go Ducks!

Re: Notes from Lannings last presser before Portland State..

I second the concern on the defense.

The lack of pressure was hard to understand. Will Jordan Burch is someone to watch on Saturday. A former 5* coming off of a 60 tackle and 3.5 sacks last season.

There's a lot of new players to watch on the defensive side of the ball.

If the Ducks can't make improvements on D this year it's time for a new DC.

I think it is more on Lanning than the DC per se...

+DL was hired as the outside linebackers coach in 2018 at Georgia. He became the DC in 2019.

+Kirby Smart was the DC at Alabama from 2008-2015 before becoming the HC at Georgia in 2016. Smart's footprint was all over the Georgia defense by the time Lanning arrived...talent, experience, depth, etc.

+Lanning recruited, coached and managed well what Smart had in place BUT he did not BUILD the Georgia defense to national championship caliber...Georgia first played for a national championship under Smart in 2017.

So I have always believed Lanning has been over hyped as a defensive coach.

However my expectation upon his hiring at Oregon was we would see a defense that would make "statements" in game after game.

Instead by the end of the season(osu and uw) it was hard to watch.

I still believe until I am shown otherwise, Lanning's defensive coaching staff structure is wacky and part of the problem i.e. a defensive oriented HC and TWO co-DC's?!?😲🙄

If he is as good as advertised coming from Georgia then HE should have HIS footprints all over the defense and I don't think that is the case at all. Why? Because he has never built a great defense...he inherited one at Georgia. Big difference.

You make some good points. To his credit he didn't meddle with offense, which excelled like it hasn't for ages last year. Some credit it due as Mario would got rightly criticized for micromanaging the offense. For a defensive minded coach you would think he would've gotten involved and made some improvements on that side of the ball. He's still young, really young and the 5th youngest coach in college football. I'd like to think DL is still capable of being a good defensive coach and just needs some time. He doesn't seem as hard headed as Mario and stuck in his ways so I wouldn't be surprised to see some improvements.
