Re: A long read concerning Lanning's mental approach

1) The best mentally tough / focused Oregon teams I have seen this century were Chip Kelly's and nobody before him(Bellotti) and after have come close to approaching it...Helfraud, Taggart, Cristobal and Lanning(so far). Many good teams with those coaches but Kelly is the Gold Standard in my opinion for great teams with his TOTAL domination of the Conference and coming within a couple of plays of winning a National Championship.

2) Every aspect of leading a college football team has changed with NIL, Transfer Portal, realignment of conferences and so forth...including the mental game. I think the most important mental game now for a head coach is ROSTER RETENTION and working to make sure the players you want to stay in the program will do so. "Brotherhood" only works so well if players stay around long enough to achieve it.

3) This Saturday is the first game THIS season to "correct" the blunders of last season which cost the team dearly. We will see if Lanning himself can follow his mental game mantras that he projects to the team because if the head coach can't do what he expects the players to do...even though speeches never win games.

Re: A long read concerning Lanning's mental approach

good stuff, ORG.
what I've seen/heard this year is a variation of the "nameless, faceless opponent' narrative. not sure from whom Lanning inherited it.
Q: Who do we play next week?
  A: Oregon!
we as a team have standards. if we play to our standards, the W/L will take care of itself, regardless of who we play. when the sh-storm is raging and you're behind on the road . . . win the next play. win the next possession. 60 minutes, or as long as it takes. just play Oregon Football.
not a whole lot new there, although perhaps phrased differently.

Lanning is fortunate to have a lot of experienced upper-classmen on this team (credit to DL and staff for working the transfer portal and convincing legacy players to stay one more year). letting them speak and listening to them is smart business.
lots of those guys will be gone next year, and there will be fewer easy opponents. DL & staff will be earning their money.
