Re: A discussion about the RB room

If Bucky does indeed go pro, I hope James becomes RB#1. Dude is a stud and I believe he was extremely under-utilized this year. So much so, I wonder if he could be considering portal-ing out? I hope not, but there is talent behind him. Hopefully Noah comes back healthy.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

I hope it's still possible to land a big bruising RB in the portal. I like all the small quick rb's we've had. But for playoff football we ideally need to have power at that position.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Yeah. Agree.

Honestly can't remember a guy like that since Freeman.

We have Dante Dowdell, listed at 6'2" and 215. A freshman from Mississippi who was highly regarded. I hope we'll see a lot more of him next year. I agree; I prefer a bruiser.

Thanks for that bit of info, I'll be hoping to hear good things about him come spring football.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Cyrus Habibi-Likio was UO's sledgehammer for a couple of years. 6-1, 215 lbs. led Oregon in rushing TDs in 2019, not CJ or Travis. was instrumental in the come-from-behind win in Husky Stadium that sent the Ducks to the Rose Bowl. straight-ahead, smashmouth runner. he transferred to Boise St; don't know how his career went from there.

Dowdell could become that guy, or the Ducks could land someone in the portal. this is definitely a need. B1G football is a different animal. the UO O-line performed well this year. were among the best in the nation in pass-blocking and keeping Bo clean. probably graded out around a B in run-blocking. that needs to get better next year.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

If I recall correctly, Habibi-Likio left Oregon because he wanted to be an every down player vs coming in when there are only 5-yards to go for a TD.

On a larger scale...the "fullback" position has been phased out of college football and the NFL.

Spread no huddle up tempo empty backfield offenses have made the need for a "big" RB less relevant.

Need extra bulk with offensive scoring positions? Bring in multiple TE's...they can catch passes, block and get down the field faster than a bulky RB.

Smaller faster RB's can come out of the backfield and catch passes.

Kind of like FAX machines...still can be valuable and useful in specific situations but not in the volume they were formerly used.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Well I was a little envious of that big RB from Washington, Johnson. I think he gained over 100 yards on us and he hadn't been 100% for awhile. I'd like a runner like that with James and Whittington. Hopefully Dowdell emerges.

Yep, and this years Doak Walker winner from OK. State is 6'2" and 215, same as Dowdell. I like a big back; pound the LOS and wear down the D line. Kids these days are big and fast..lot different from my playing days

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Unfortunately it appears we won't get to see if Dowdell evolves into a key RB for Oregon.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Well that stinks. Maybe there's hope that Lanning can get one in the portal. Hope he sees the importance of that type of back.

Re: A discussion about the RB room

Oregon did at one point with Trey Benson(listed now as 6'1" 221 lbs) but a torn ACL his first year(redshirt) and only 6 carries his second year...he transferred to Florida State...just declared for the NFL Draft and Mel Kiper Jr ranks him the second best RB in the Draft!
