Players commit to coaches, NIL and culture. It’s no longer about the university. Alabama lost its edge with NIL and the portal and Saban tapped out rather than ride out the eventual decline in the program. Honestly, the only reason a great coach would leave a program with top ten resources via to take on that dream job while his bank account already able to cushion the blow if the move failed. While Lanning may go in the next 3-4 years, I think it would be to a program with an ever better set of resources in place. That is a short list….
Sabin said with the changes coaching is now a young man's game.
Like you say the portal has leveled the playing field. It's one of the positives as from a fan perspectives it's been a double edged sword.
Even recently I wasn't sure an expanded playoff would work since it seemed like the same 2-3 powerhouses were so much better than everyone else. Now it's seems a lot more wide open.
Just like in business college football isn't going to reward teams that can't adapt and stick to their old ways. E.I.: Dabo at Clemson. He doesn't believe in the portal. While he can certainly recruit I doubt he'll ever win another Championship with his rigid stance.
It's great to have a team that's willing and able to adapt.
I recently ran across some folks talking about the Nix families comments and experience with the Ducks. Bo's dad couldn't praise the atmosphere and environment of the entire program. He said it was a day and night difference from what's going on at Auburn. DL said the same about the AD and Mullens being their in support of him.
Go Ducks!
